DSP - The heart of the System

95% Re-engineered

Premium aluminium casing, in a new burnished grey finish.

It may look similar outside, but inside Mu-so 2nd Generation, the majority of components have been upgraded to improve performance.

The cabinet design has been re-engineered to create 13% more internal volume, enabling bigger, better bass. Both the cabinet bracing and baffle moulding have been redesigned for improved rigidity, which suppresses and controls vibrations.

The distinctive heat-sink fins are now more compact, while still being ultra-effective, and continuing to feature Naim patented technology that discreetly incorporates the wi-fi antenna.

Upgraded App Control

The updated Naim app allows you to browse by artist, genre, album and more, complete with artwork and extended music information.

Control volume, light settings, room modes and create playlists.

Multiroom Music Made Easy With Smart Integration

Mu-so 2nd Generation works brilliantly on its own or as part of a multiroom music set-up. There are three easy ways to make it multiroom:

1. Combine it with other networked Naim products (including 1st Generation Mu-so and Mu-so Qb) via the updated Naim app

2. Pair it with other AirPlay 2-compatible wireless speakers via the Apple Home app

3. Pair it with other Chromecast devices via groups controlled by the Google Home app.

Customisation

Mu-so 2nd Generation’s speaker grille has had a style update. The standard black grille can be easily swapped for one of 3 new colour options – Olive, Terracotta and Peacock - to best suit your taste and décor. 2nd Generation Grilles will be available in the near future.

No matter how vanishingly low we’ve managed to make distortion and jitter or how well we’ve controlled power supply noise and interference, we will always make our final judgement on a product in the listening room. Every component has to earn its place.

When we listen it’s not just for technical competencies. It’s about being able to forget that you’re listening to hi-fi at all and becoming immersed in a complete experience, feeling all the emotion that the artist intended when they first created the music.

Built to last

Unlike most other consumer electronics, Naim Audio products are not designed to be replaced in three to four years. Buying a Naim Audio product is an investment in many years of incredible musical experiences. It’s a choice to make music a central part of your life.

We can still repair almost every product we’ve ever made in our service and restoration department. The skilled technicians there are some of our most experienced, with the know-how to breathe life into classic Naim Audio equipment. They regularly restore some of the first hi-fi products we ever made, ready to provide another 30 years of musical enjoyment to their owners.

The good news is that there is usually an upgrade path which will allow you to attain the next level of performance without having to purchase a completely new system. That could be as simple as upgrading to a Power-Line mains cable, opting for an additional power supply or even making the move to separate pre and power amplifiers.

Ultimate Attention to Detail

The SNAIC Shaker

Every Naim Audio interconnect is shaken 180 times by a custom-designed pneumatic production device affectionately named ‘The SNAIC Shaker’ by our technicians. Why do we do this? Because it improves sound quality.

40-point Floating Point Digital Filter

The digital filter in the NDS is mathematically precise enough to count 2 ³² x 2²⁵⁶ seconds (that’s a 5 followed by 86 zeros). In other words, it’s powerful enough to count every second since the universe began many times over with pin-point accuracy. This level of precision is essential in order to keep filter arithmetic noise below – 144dB (the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio of 24bit PCM audio) at all times for best sound quality.

Absolute Power

Nowhere is our determination to dance to the beat of our own drum more apparent than in our understanding of and enthusiasm for better quality power supplies. Improving the power supply has a clear and tangible effect on sound quality, we’ve observed it over and over. It’s why Naim products carry large transformers with isolated windings. The philosophy is exemplified in our range of separate power supplies that have the sole purpose of providing smooth, stable and low-noise power for audio electronics to shine.

Decoupling and Isolation

Minimising mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal interference between components is a key part of Naim Audio design. Decoupling sockets to cut off interference from incoming mains power and suspending circuit boards on brass sub plates to create an isolated environment for critical electronics are two applications of this principle. A less obvious example is the creation of small bends in individual resistors by hand, decreasing microphonic interference (microscopic vibrations which degrade sound quality). But similar techniques are applied at every level of the design and build. And we only introduce techniques if they prove effective and repeatable in listening tests.

Hand-matched Componentry

Matching the characteristics of sound critical components for each channel (left and right speaker) of an amplifier can greatly improve sound quality. Batches of resistors typically come matched to within a 5% margin of error. Through listening tests we found that if the resistance of the left and right channels are matched to closer than 0.5% music becomes dramatically more communicative and engaging. Following this discovery a bespoke production procedure was conceived to help us match resistors by hand.

Our Story

Our story begins with one man’s passion for music and weaves its way through four decades and a raft of iconic product launches to the present day.

Naim Audio founder Julian Vereker MBE (1945-2000) was a racing car driver, entrepreneur and self-taught engineer with a deep passion for music. Spending his spare time listening to and recording his friends playing live in the 1960s, Julian found that playback on his system at home fell woefully short of the experience he craved.

Not content with second best he decided to design his own amplifiers and loudspeakers, ignoring accepted wisdom and focusing on aspects of performance that made music burst to life. These first designs laid the foundations for a range of iconic and award-winning hi-fi products that would reach well into the next century.

1969 Humble Beginnings

Frustrated with the quality of music reproduction after recording his friends playing live, Naim Audio’s founder, Julian Vereker turned from building his own racing cars to experimenting with amplifiers.

1972 A first start at Capital Radio

Julian won a contract to supply then start-up radio station, Capital Radio, with audio equipment. The successful design was a compact version of an early Naim Audio power amplifier combined with speaker drive units in one cabinet – the NAM 502.

1973 Naim Audio Officially Founded

Following the success of Capital Radio, Naim Audio was officially incorporated in 1973 with Julian Vereker and his co-founder Shirley Clarke as directors. Based in a shop in the centre of Salisbury, our first HQ had both manufacturing and demonstration facilities.

1973 The NAP 200 Power Amplifier

Our first consumer product for home use was launched in the year of our founding: the NAP 200 power amplifier. Originally designed in 1971, its descendant power amplifiers differ greatly technologically but still aim for the same performance goals of pace, rhythm and timing.

1974 The NAC 12 Preamplifier

With a network of dedicated independent retailers now on board in the UK, the NAC 12, our first production preamplifier, was launched.

1980 Classic Advertising

As Naim Audio grew in popularity through the 70s and early 80s, the team decided to grab the attention of the press and public with a series of tongue-in-cheek adverts. They reflected the confident, often unorthodox nature of our approach to music playback and have become iconic in their own right.

1983 NAIT Integrated Amplifier

Naim Audio’s first integrated amplifier the NAIT introduced. This iconic little integrated amp sounded quite unlike any other integrated of its day and set a trend for so-called ‘super integrateds’.

1985 Brompton Connection

Julian joins friend and fellow inventor Andrew Ritchie at his newly founded company. Their product is an innovative bicycle which can be quickly and easily folded up for transportation and storage. He backs the business and becomes a director, helping them to set up production and eventually to become one of the most iconic British brands in the world: Brompton Bicycle.

1985 The Queen's Award

Naim Audio is recognised with the prestigious Queen’s Award for the first time in 1985. We would go on to repeat this achievement a further two times in the 21st century, winning for Export in 2010 and for Innovation in digital music streaming in 2014.

1991 The CDS CD Player

Like so many Naim Audio products, the design of our first CD player, the CDS, flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Its two box configuration gave the power supply its own separate enclosure and the CD clamp used a rare earth magnet to keep its mass low whilst still firmly holding the disc without vibration.

1993 Naim Records is Born

Created by Naim founder Julian Vereker, Naim Records combined his love for music with his quest to deliver the best sound quality, from the studio to the listening room.

2000 NAP 500 Power Amplifier

The year 2000 marked a step change in Naim Audio history. After several years in development, the new flagship Naim Audio NAP 500 power amplifier was born and with it the new industrial design aesthetic that would redefine Naim Audio for the 21st century. Its music-making ability would only be bettered by the arrival of Statement in 2014.

2008 Naim for Bentley

Two brands with a distinguished British heritage and a passion for engineering excellence share an 18 month development project to produce the Naim for Bentley in car system. Using sophisticated Naim Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and speaker drive unit technology, the system is available as a custom extra on all Bentley models.

2009 NaimUniti

An all-in-one player which combines the new world of music streaming with a CD player and integrated amplifier inspired by the original NAIT is launched. The NaimUniti won a coveted What Hi-Fi Product of the Year award in 2009 and in 2012.

2013 Celebrating 40 Years

We celebrated our 40th anniversary in true Naim Audio style with live music from Naim Records acts at the Salisbury Arts Centre, just a stones-throw from where it all started at our first HQ on Salt Lane in the centre of town.

2014 Naim Audio Wins Queens Award for Innovation

2014 The Queen's Award

Naim Audio wins UK's highest business accolade for our ground-breaking digital range of network music players, all-in-one players, hard disk players/servers and digital to analogue converters. The 3rd Queen's Award win for Naim Audio, with previous wins for Export in 1985 and 2010.

2014 Statement

Crafted for pure musical performance, 2014 saw the pinnacle of Naim’s engineering knowledge and artistry in the arrival of Statement. The ground-breaking series comprises the NAC S1 preamplifier and NAP S1 mono power amplifier.

Conceived over a decade ago, with development from 2011, the objective was to set a new reference standard in high-end audio and music reproduction and aesthetics, a new page in the Naim Audio story.

2014 Mu-so

Naim Audio launches its first complete wireless music system, Mu-so, offering real versatility and performance alongside multiroom capability, a new landmark in high fidelity digital music. Mu-so is driven by a powerful digital brain and fitted with custom-designed speakers for a musical experience that has to be heard to be believed.

2016 Mu-so Qb

2016 saw the launch of Mu-so’s charismatic little brother, Mu-so Qb, our new compact wireless music system. Measuring 20cm ³, Qb’s glass-filled polymer casing and bass radiators help create huge low frequencies and beautiful depth of sound. Featuring the same clever digital brain as Mu-so, with 300W of power, Qb has taken the hi-fi world by storm.

Ruark R410 is the brand’s reference compact active system from British manufacturer Ruark, featuring FM, DAB+ and Internet Radio. It supports wireless connectivity via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, with compatibility for the most popular streaming platforms, including Spotify, Tidal and Amazon Music. Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast are also built in.

The R410 is the first model in Ruark’s new Series 100, setting a new benchmark for elegance and sound quality.

The R410 is an extremely versatile all-in-one system: a jewel of technology and design, beautifully integrated, with direct support for DAB+ / FM radio and music streaming services.

The audio world is constantly evolving: from LPs in the 1950s, to CDs in the 1980s, to MP3s in the 2000s. Today we are immersed in the world of streaming, which allows us to browse vast digital libraries across multiple platforms, where every album is just a click away.

With the R410 active system, music can be played directly from the most popular music platforms thanks to the built-in high-quality streamer, while also allowing connection of essential sources such as turntables or CD players.

At the heart of the R410 is a powerful processor capable of handling high-resolution digital audio streams via Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast. The processor also provides an intuitive interface, controlled either physically via the RotoDial controller on the top panel or through smartphones and tablets.

The RotoDial is the hallmark of the renowned British brand, featured on all products since the R1 in 2006. In the Series 100 it has been further refined, delivering an even more satisfying tactile experience. A rechargeable remote control is included.

For years, Ruark systems have provided sound for the finest domestic and professional environments, achieving great success in hotel installations and commercial spaces.

The refined design of the Series 100, combining wood and hi-tech materials, integrates a high-resolution colour display arranged vertically to echo the layout of modern smartphone streaming apps. The interface is extremely intuitive, allowing easy navigation through controls and clear display of the currently playing tracks.

All controls are managed via the iconic RotoDial located on the top panel, enabling product configuration and fast access to all services. The look recalls the controls found in the interiors of the world’s most elegant cars—unsurprisingly, the press often associates Ruark products with the splendour of Bentley.

Unlike other Ruark Internet Radios that rely on third-party software shared with other brands, the software and internal processing of the R410 are fully custom-designed.

The exceptionally refined and elegant lines of this system, as well as its larger sibling the R810, are inspired by 1970s design. Perfect proportions, premium materials and meticulous attention to detail make this device an ideal complement for any interior style.

The cabinet and front grille are handcrafted using sustainable woods reminiscent of slow-growing hardwoods. The cabinet is also available in a Soft Grey finish to blend seamlessly into any environment.

The R410 is an extremely comprehensive system capable of handling virtually any music source, but its true strength lies in its integrated services.

It features a high-quality radio tuner for FM stations with RDS and digital DAB / DAB+.

For streaming services, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect are supported for direct playback from their native players, while Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast modules enable access to Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and many more. The RJ45 Ethernet port ensures greater network stability and direct access to internet music streams.

It allows playback of files stored on devices connected to the home network, such as PCs or NAS systems, via UPnP and DLNA protocols.

The R410 also supports high-quality wireless playback via Bluetooth, enabling quick and easy music streaming without relying on the home internet network.

Using Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast, multiroom playback can be set up, allowing all compatible devices throughout the home to play simultaneously.
