Description

Stirling Broadcast AB-2 dedicated Subwoofer pair for LS3/5a speakers. (The image shows a pair of AB-2 with a pair of LS3/5a mounted on - not included). Exactly modelled on the old Rogers AB1 with some differences... this is why Stirling AB-2 are better:

We design our new AB-2 for a broader, less peaky frequency response (AB-1 produced a "one-note thud" centred at 70Hz), with AB-2 you can hear progression through the bass register.

Our AB-2 cabinet is taller by 48mm. We made it taller so that the inner chambers and port length/diameter would be optimised for our high quality SB-4424 drive units.

We use the latest rubberised damping pads (as used in our V2), these are far better that the brittle bituminous material used in the old AB1. We use a more stable plinth, with heavy duty threaded inserts and high grade spikes.

We use high quality gold plated upper & lower connectors (Rogers AB-1 used nickel plated connectors). We use a better link lead system (to link the AB-2 to the V2's or other brand of LS3/5a's), with gold plated connectors.

Our AB-2 is balanced to work at it's best with Stirling V2, but it also produces great results when used with any classic LS3/5a's from 1974 - 1997.

Some tips on using Stirling AB-2
- Firstly, the bass ports should face "inside" (face towards each other).
- You must use the supplied SPIKES - this is because without the spikes the bass will be poor quality and not very tight or deep.......So, the spikes must be used.
- Position the AB-2's with a gap 2 metres between them (well approx 1.9 to 2.2 metres)
- Do not toe-in - they must face straight down the room.
- When spikes are adjusted and the AB-2's are stable/firm (and level), only then place the LS3/5a V2 on top.
- Carefully check the interconnecting wires are all correct (red to red / black to black)

Also:
- Do not forget that the AB-2's are "double boxed". So slide the inner box out from the outer box.
- Open the inner box from the correct end, or you will not find the AB-2 accessory's (2 x plinths, 8 x spikes with lock-nuts, 2 x link cables sets).
- Stirling AB-2 will work with ALL brands of LS3/5a .........11 & 15 OHM from 1974 vintage to 1998 as well as V2.

We sell AB-2 with 5 year warranty on the drive units and crossovers.

A BIT OF STIRLING HISTORY...

After a long history of repairing and servicing LS3/5a's from within both the professional and amateur arenas, Stirling Broadcast became involved in the manufacture of LS3/5a loudspeakers after purchasing and reselling the bankrupt Rogers stock as NOS. Once an LS3/5a License had been obtained from the BBC, Stirling Broadcast commissioned the manufacture of new T27 and B110 drive units from KEF and reintroduced the LS3/5a to the market, to enthusiastic reception. Shortly afterwards Stirling Broadcast began its path of innovation in the LS3/5a world by introducing higher quality crossovers, referred to as 'SuperSpec', and thin-walled, screw-back cabinets modelled after the prototype LS3/5a cabinets and as seen on the 001/002 pair demonstrated at the HiFi News shows of 2001 and 2002.

Following problems and uncertainties with the continuing supply of T27 and B110 drive units Stirling Broadcast have introduced an updated version of the LS3/5a, unofficially known as the V2. The designer, a luminary in the audio industry, has utilised specially prepared SEAS and ScanSpeak drive units with high grade crossovers that accurately mimic the response characteristics of the original versions. Indeed, feedback from professional and domestic customers so far has indicated that Stirling Broadcast has successfully managed to capture the best aspects of both versions of the LS3/5a, combining the faster and more modern sound of the 11ohm version with the seductive vocal abilities of the 15ohm version, and adding an improved and extended bass response and greater power handling for good measure.

This 'V2' version retains the LS3/5a License from the British Broadcasting Corporation and is suitable as a drop in replacement for any working pair of LS3/5as. Several professional broadcast establishments have already deployed pairs of 'V2' LS3/5a's into production environments.

Manufactured under license from the British Broadcasting Corporation.
